Position Summary

Responsible for coordination of daily clinical business and administrative operations for the Washington University Department of Anesthesiology (WUDA), primarily at the Washington University School of Medical (WUSM).


Front-facing leadership position that promotes and maintains effective communications and collaboration while providing support to a wide variety of constituents including WUSM faculty, staff and trainees such as: attending anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), advanced care nurse practitioners (ACNPs), fellows, residents, student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs), clinical and administrative business and executive leaders, etc. Participates in the strategic and tactical planning and overall development of the academic clinical operations, and effectively implements operational solutions. Provides staff supervision and organizational management.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Works to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction for clinical administrative support.
  • Provides management direction and assistance in resolving issues and concerns by WUDA faculty physicians and clinicians.
  • Oversees the clinical administrative and business operations of anesthesiology services in ~60 operating rooms at BJH, plus remote areas and local off-campus locations.
  • Works with the clinical and business leaders on developing strategic plans for operational changes in support of excellent patient care and in alignment with contractual obligations with hospital partners.
  • Promotes and supports continuous improvement of quality and service to ensure effective clinical outcomes, and patient satisfaction.
  • Manages clinical and administrative support staff such as medical scribe and staffing administrator(s), medical scribe(s), and coordinator(s), and other administrative team members through regular staff meetings, performance reviews, conflict resolution, application of solutions or changes to workflow, etc.
  • Coordinates staffing administration in an efficient and effective manner, ensuring timely provision of daily clinical schedules in alignment with staffing ratios while balancing individual preferences, experience, expertise, and other nuanced factors needed to successfully set up teams poised to provide excellent patient care and clinician satisfaction.
  • Promotes and maintains effective communications and collaboration with WUSM faculty.
  • Responsible for coverage of daily scheduling team with time-sensitive, critical daily duties such as: attendance of daily morning huddle for departmental staffing and operational updates; attendance of the daily D-1 meeting for hospital updates; production and dissemination of daily OR schedules for faculty, clinicians, and trainees; remote management of the trauma board; and relief coverage through end of day.
  • Obtains expert knowledge of all systems used for clinical administration, as appropriate, including UKG EZCall (formerly Kronos EZCall), EPIC, Tableau, etc.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, mentors, and terminates clinical administrative support staff.
  • Supports department for employment verification and miscellaneous verifications for tuition benefit, loan forgiveness, etc.
  • Coordinates and maintains administrative equipment and supplies within par levels.
  • Notifies business director of any facility related issues including the need for equipment repair or purchase, and completes new equipment request paperwork.
  • Serves as the BJH on-site liaison for facility management and operational oversight.
  • Provides reports, analysis and records maintenance as required.
  • Partners with clinical and cross-functional leaders to understand and collaborate on ways to support faculty and clinicians on their training/educational needs.
  • Serves as clinical administrative leader internally and represents the department on committees, as appropriate, and implements committee decisions.
  • Promotes and maintains effective communications and collaboration with WUSM faculty, CRNAs, APPs, and staff, as well as with our hospital partners and other key constituents.
  • Manages storage and updating of WUDA and BJH clinical guidelines in multiple repositories and systems with the future intent of minimizing duplicate effort through new solution.
  • Maintains compliance with existing policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary Range

$68,100.00 - $105,500.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
