Who We Are:

Southwest Research Institute's Solar System Science & Exploration Division is located in Boulder, Colorado. We conduct basic observational, modeling, and theoretical research in a wide range of solar system and astrophysical topics, including Solar Physics/ Heliophysics, Planetary Science, Astrophysics, Origins Research, and Geophysics. We also participate and/or lead several NASA orbital and deep space missions, including New Horizons (Pluto), Mars Science Laboratory (Mars), Lucy (Jovian Trojans), PUNCH (Sun) and Solar Orbiter (Sun).

Objectives of this Role:

• Learn impact physics software such as iSALE to assist the PI and Postdoctoral researcher.
• Run simulations on the generation of craters into icy targets based on data obtained by the PI.
• Internship open to local graduate students.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

• Read scientific literature to learn the technical background of the project.
• Carry out numerical simulations of the impact crater formation process.
• Write up results of simulations for research conferences and scientific publications.
• Assist scientists in conducting fundamental research based on an awarded NASA grant.

Requirements:

• Must be pursuing a Masters or a PhD in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Sciences, Geology or Astrophysics.
• 0 years: Programming in a language such as Python.
• Good communication skills and be willing to work both independently and in a group setting.
• Experience working with Cassini data.
• Experience mapping and analyzing craters on Saturnian satellites.
