Duties

  • Serves as a technical specialist in Wildlife Biology for a variety of biological and environmental projects and activities associated with planning, construction, and operation and maintenance activities.
  • Collects biological data utilizing the aquatic instream flow methodologies and habitat-based models via Geographic Information System (GIS).
  • Ensures compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), parallel State environmental laws, and other applicable Federal and State laws and regulations.
  • Provides administrative and technical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work.
  • Analyzes diverse viewpoints to make planning decisions or solve work problems.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet one of the Basic Requirements AND one of the Minimum Qualification Requirements described below. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience. Basic Requirement for the Wildlife Biologist GS-0486 Series:



1. Education: Successful complete of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biological science that included: at t least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences. (Note: You must submit a copy your transcripts).

2. Combination of Education and Experience : equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects,12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: You must submit a copy your transcripts).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying:



GS-11 Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing 2 of the 4 following: (1) assembling information and delivering written technical documents or reports; (2) leading a group to accomplish a common goal; (3) performing the operations, functions or financial requirements for supporting wildlife operations or airfield activities; or (4) interpreting or applying applicable advisory circulars, laws, ordinances, policies, standards, regulations, or related information.



OR



Education: Successful completion of at least three (3) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in wildlife biology, wildlife science, or a field directly related to the work of the position which provided me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Examples include course work in mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, zoology, such as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in the listed subjects (NOTE: You must submit copies of your transcripts if claiming education).



OR



Combination: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education described above in A and B, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. Please note only graduate education in excess of two years (36 semester hours) may be used to qualify under this option. (You must submit copies of your transcripts).



GS-12 Specialized Experience:
Have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 level in the Federal Service (obtained either in the private or public sectors) performing 3 of the 4 following: (1) assembling information and delivering written technical documents or reports; (2) leading a group to accomplish a common goal; (3) performing the operations, functions or financial requirements for supporting wildlife operations or airfield activities; or (4) interpreting or applying applicable advisory circulars, laws, ordinances, policies, standards, regulations, or related information.



SELECTIVE FACTOR: The applicant must hold current Federal Aviation Administration qualifications for a Wildlife Biologist that conducts Wildlife Hazard Assessments and implements Wildlife Hazard Management Plans at airports and - as described in the FAA Advisory Circular: Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-12 of this announcement.


To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

Physical Demands: Some work requires periods of walking, standing, bending, climbing, or driving a motor vehicle.
