Job Description

Are you looking for a Challenge? Looking for an innovative organization and the opportunity to learn and grow professionally? We can help! We are seeking an Aquatic Ecologist and Data Scientist to support the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Research and Development (ORD), Pacific Ecological Systems Division (PESD). This is a remote role supporting EPA out of Corvallis, Oregon.

I've never heard of Terrestris. What do you do?

At Terrestris, we leverage technology to create better mission outcomes through better human performance. We form strong client and team relationships through transparency and strive to create an environment where our team can let their excellence shine through. By finding, developing, and incorporating new ideas, we provide memorable services. Rooted in the USMC values of honor, courage, and commitment, Terrestris seeks to deliver extraordinary value to the American people by helping the Government become more efficient and effective.

So, what will the Aquatic Ecologist and Data Scientist at Terrestris do?

As the Aquatic Ecologist and Data Scientist, you will use National Aquatic Resources Surveys (NARS) data, with no additional training, to support multi-scale analyses of the conditions of wetlands, rivers and streams, and lakes. You will work in coordination with the PESD's NARS Team, collaborating with EPA Office of Water team members, EPA Regions, and selected States.

What does a typical day look like for the Aquatic Ecologist and Data Scientist?

You will:

  • Support four (4) NARS surveys and assessments:
    • National Rivers and Streams Assessment (NRSA).
    • National Lakes Assessment (NLA).
    • National Coastal Condition Assessment (NCCA).
    • National Wetland Condition Assessment (NWCA).
  • Attend approximately one call per month to discuss various indicators across the four surveys (NLA, NRSA, NCCA, NWCA); discussions may result in the requirement to provide a written response and/or specific data analysis, to be specified through a Technical Directive Memo (TDM).
  • Review, validate, and perform quality control and assurance on water chemistry results submitted by analytical laboratories and field-based observations submitted by field crews for the 2023-2024 NRSA data.
  • Collaborate with OW and ORD staff to develop one unit for the NARS Academy curriculum.

What qualifications do you look for?

You might be the professional we're looking for if you have:

  • A Ph.D. in environmental sciences specializing in either chemical, physical, or biological aspects of freshwater systems.
  • At least 10 years of experience in the analysis and application of EPA's National Aquatic Resources Surveys (NARS) indicator and survey design data.
  • At least 10 years of experience in the application of NARS and Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program data for determining condition of freshwater systems including the development of indices and setting of thresholds.
  • At least 10 years of experience in using SAS, R, or similar statistical software package(s) for manipulating, reviewing, analyzing, and interpreting large data files.
  • Published works clearly demonstrating the preceding qualifications (journal articles, meeting abstracts) for rivers and streams, wetlands, and lakes.
