Position overview
Position title: Genomics Lab Assistant (Junior Specialist Rank)
Salary range: The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series Fiscal Year . A salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is an annual salary of $53,100 - $56,600.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description

The Kelley and Cornejo Laboratories, both in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invite applications for the position of Junior Specialist In DNA And RNA Extraction, Handling, and Sequencing . Under the supervision of Professor Joanna Kelley, the successful candidate will support and assist in research that uses a diversity of omic approaches, with an emphasis on genomics and transcriptomics, to understand how genetic variation is distributed among populations over geographic space, and how this changes through time.

The duties of this job are to: 1) perform field work to obtain samples, 2) extract DNA and RNA from a variety of tissues, using in-house protocols and standard kits; 3) assess the quality of extractions using Qubit, Nanodrop and other quantitation methods; 4) prepare and quantify libraries for next-generation sequencing; and 5) perform preliminary quality control analyses of returned data using bioinformatics approaches.

The selected candidate must demonstrate the ability to learn new techniques and implement protocols with attention to detail and to participate in the research of UCSC faculty through DNA and RNA extraction, genomic library preparation, sequencing, analytical measurements, bioinformatics QC and through training and supervision of users.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)
  • Bachelors degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in molecular or evolutionary biology or related scientific field at the time of application.
  • A minimum of one year of previous experience in laboratory research or field work.
  • Knowledge of and experience with molecular biology, PCR amplification, analysis of sequencing data.
